Forecast Calls For Cloudy Skies, Meatballs And Laughs

Hollywood has made animation something to see, they have made what was once enjoyed by the very young into something that everyone can enjoy even the young at heart, the revolutionary use of 3D in some of these movies has become amazing to see, and when looked at on an IMAX screen the 3D aspect brings the action right out into your lap. So in "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs" when it appears that food is falling from the sky, the IMAX 3D makes it look as if it is falling into your lap as well.

Inspired by the beloved children's book, the film focuses on a town where food falls from the sky like rain. The town once thrived but now it seems that since it is located in the middle of nowhere and has only sardines to offer, bad times have fallen on the town. Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader), a young inventor who dreams of creating something that will improve every one's life, most notably his own invents a machine that turns everyday water into food. Flint's dad Tim (James Caan) believes that Flint is out of his element and tries to get him to settle down. Flint takes a job in his dads store but on the day that Mayor Shelbourne (Bruce Campbell) decides to make a sardine land to bring money back into the town and mainly into his pockets, Flint decides to try his new invention. When Flints invention goes awry and ends up in the sky everyone in the town is upset including the weather station reporter Sam Sparks (Anna Faris), but when it starts to rain cheeseburgers everyone becomes Flint's friend including the town bully 'Baby' Brent (Andy Samberg), who was the towns spokesperson for their sardine trade.

Mayor Shelbourne knows that this invention can bring more money into the town than anything else makes Flint use his invention beyond it's capabilities and soon the town is over run with food. When tourist start to show up the invention has been working overtime and soon ever one is in danger of food tornado's and other food storms, not only the little island town but every major city as well. Police officer Earl Devereaux (Mr. T) tells everyone to use the food to make rafts to escape, the Mayor grabs the first one but he has gotten so fat and greedy from all the food he has eaten, he finds out that once you start to eat the raft you are on you are in serious trouble. Of course Flint, Sam and 'Baby' Brent fly up to the machine to turn it off and run into a little bit of its new defenses, they have to fight there way into the heart of the machine and download a virus. The ending is one that kids of all ages will enjoy, the movies tone is light and even when the characters are in danger, the story is told light heartily, and kids will never be scared watching the ending as it unfolds. The hero saves the town and becomes popular, he even gets the girl.

The animation here is truly one to see, the story will keep even the older adult in rapture, kids of all ages will find themselves rooting for Flint as he gathers himself up and saves the day. The 3D is amazing and if you can see this movie on the IMAX screen, I can't recommend that enough, it is worth the little bit extra that the IMAX format costs, the 3d effects appear as if they are right there in your lap and you may find yourself reaching out to touch them, don't worry you won't be the only one.

I give Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs a 3 and on my avoidance scale a 0, go take the kids to see one of the most thrilling animation movies to come along this year, there is an abundance of animation scheduled to make its way to cinema's near you take the time to see what may just be the best one.
