This (Dance) Flick Turns Comedy Upside Down

When comedy works it has the viewers rolling on the floor, when it doesn't viewers sit there and just watch, there may be a smile or a smirk at one point or another. There are several types of comedy that can work, one is the slap stick variety, another can be straight out vulgarity, as with the new Wayans Brothers production "Dance Flick" we get vulgarity on top of vulgarity. The jokes aren't swearing just to swear it's the comedy skits that are dirty, but this is what makes the movie funny. The jokes may not be for everybody, the skits are made to make you laugh, they insult you before you find yourself laughing out loud.

Thomas Uncles (Damon Wayans Jr.) is a young man who is headed down a slightly bumpy road, he is friends with A-Con (Affion Crockett) who is definitely on the wrong road. As the movie opens Thomas and A-Con are in a dance battle that they lose, owing over five grand to Sugar Bear (David Alan Grier) the two must tell him they lost his money. Next we meet the female lead, she is Megan White (Shoshana Bush) who doesn't really want to dance anymore, Megan had begged her mother to come watch her at a try out one day, and her mother was killed in an accident that is funny only because its so absurd. When she transfers into the Musical High school, she meets Ms. Dontwannabebothered (Kim Wayans) who is the counselor, she tells Megan that she can be found for ten minutes every morning and for fifteen minutes every leap year. She then meets Thomas's sister Charity (Essence Atkins) who brings her baby Little Man and puts him in the locker. Megan and Thomas hit it off right away, Charity takes Megan under her wing and tells her that she can go with her to Club Violence. When the two join forces to help Thomas get the money that he owes Sugar Bear, the dance battle is on. To ensure that they win the money this time Sugar Bear comes and dances for Thomas crew, which is called The Uncle Toms. When you see Sugar Bear, he looks like he just ate a bear or two, and to watch him dance will make you roll right out of your seat.

The Wayans have been known to push the envelope on some of their movie subjects before, in Dance flick they stretch the envelope completely out of shape. The subject matter of drugs, death and teen pregnancy is all made into a butt of a joke with the Wayans, nothing is safe. One of the characters that will make you laugh is named Ms. Cameltoe (Amy Sedaris) when you see her you won't be able to stop yourself from laughing out loud. Her appearance and snappy one liners are some of the movies best moments. The Wayans do comedy the way they want to do it, they don't pretend to be something other then what they are, they are as big in Hollywood as some of the other major directors, writers and producers. You expect to do one thing in a movie by the Wayans, and that is laugh. Some of the funnier moments are with Charity and Megan, the two play off of each other and make the scenes work. It is sad to say that they are not in a few more scenes together, if they were maybe this movie would have been better.

I give Dance Flick a 2 and on my avoidance scale I give it a 1, wait a few months and see this movie when it comes to DVD, it will be a short wait, and you will feel better about the fact that you can walk away from this movie and not regret the cost of the rental.

Dance Flick is rated PG-13 for Crude and Sexual Content Throughout and Language
Running time is 1 hr. 23 mins.
